CULTURE NEWS

  • The PA Chamber’s 'Coolest Thing Made in PA' contest now features eight final contenders with votes open via social media until 4 p.m. today — the bracket began with 56 local products from across the commonwealth.  WGAL
  • James Beard Award nominees were announced this week for top restaurant and chef categories, including Lancaster chef Nathan Flaim of Luca. Winners will be revealed on June 15 in Chicago — a prestigious accolade in the culinary world.  WGAL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Tuesday, U.S. gas prices hit $4.02 per gallon amid conflict in Iran (reflecting a 35% rise since Feb. 28), and Lancaster stations may soon charge more (diesel nearing $5.45) due to supply disruptions.  WGAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Trout season opens Saturday at 8 a.m. with crews set to stock over four million trout into Pennsylvania’s waters plus officials removed Briar Creek and Middle Spring Creek from stocking due to forever chemicals and require life jackets on boats under 16 feet through April.  WGAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • PECO plans rate hikes for electric and natural gas for residents in York and Lancaster counties to fund long-term investments. If approved by the Pennsylvania Utility Commission, new rates will start Jan. 1, raising typical electric bills by $20.08 & gas bills by $14.52.  WGAL
  • Local leaders including officials from the Workforce Development Board, Economic Development Company and an affordable housing group gathered at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce meeting on Mar. 31 to review workforce trends, population growth and housing challenges + examine the county’s economic outlook.  WGAL

HEALTH NEWS

  • USDA confirmed that 18,000 ducks in Lancaster County have been infected by avian flu and that over one million birds have been affected in the past 30 days+ this marks the first confirmed case since March 17.  WGAL
