BUSINESS NEWS

  • A sign on the Starbucks on North Queen Street in downtown Lancaster tells customers the store will close by the end of the week—this closure is part of a larger restructuring effort by the company that includes many similar actions nationwide.  WGAL
  • Workers at a Lancaster Iron Hill Brewery location were shocked by the sudden shutdown on Sept 25 due to financial difficulties – the closure was announced via a scheduling app and caught the team off guard despite prior assurances. Manager Alisia Lara said many coworkers have since gotten job leads and support from the local restaurant community as they face uncertain futures.  Local 21 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • In 1777, Lancaster served as the nation’s capital for one day when the Continental Congress fled Philadelphia after a British win—local guides note that even famous figures visited the crowded city. Today, residents celebrate Capital Day with a pet parade at LancasterHistory at 10 a.m.  FOX43

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Local shops saw a rush of customers cashing in old jewelry as gold prices hit nearly $3,800 an ounce, causing people to sell coins, chains, and even gold teeth— Kathryn Pearce of Veleska Jewelry said strong bank buying and investor demand drove the surge.  FOX43

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lancaster County commissioners announced that social service providers will receive just 60% of payments starting Oct. 1 due to a potential $19 million shortfall as the state budget remains 88 days past due—officials are using tax revenues and ARPA funds and urge state lawmakers to resolve the issue.  FOX43
  • The Route 30/Route 222 interchange in Lancaster County will close from 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10 to 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 13 for demolition of the old eastbound Route 30 bridge—drivers are advised to follow detour routes with backup dates set for Oct. 17-20 if needed.  WGAL

HEALTH NEWS

  • WellSpan is partnering with the American Heart Association to host two free heart walks for heart attack survivors; one is held today at Long’s Park in Lancaster at 10 a.m. and another is scheduled in Lebanon at Ironwood Park on Sunday the 28th at 11 a.m.—the walks let survivors connect with peers during recovery.  Local 21 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Week 5 high school football scores were reported—Annville Cleona won 35—26 over Columbia and Bishop McDevitt defeated Carlisle 49—0, with several games ending in shutouts or low scores. The results show teams across the region are gearing up for next week’s contests.  WGAL
