Good morning, Lancaster. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 3rd of October.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Alison Moon, a 33-year-old Lancaster resident, has spent over $10,000 on at least 10 billboards since February to support trans rights and raise issues such as bodily autonomy and ICE detentions, which has sparked a rapid online response. She is set to extend her campaign with a third billboard (No Kings Protest) scheduled for Oct. 18.  Local 21 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, PPL Electric Utilities asked the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission for a rate increase to modernize the grid and safeguard it against severe weather and cyber threats—residential customers may pay about $13 more a month if approved. The proposal, the company’s first rate hike in 10 years, is under review with public input beginning in December and could take effect by July 1.  WGAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Pennsylvania lawmakers are proposing Abby’s Law after a 12-year-old died in June when she was hit by a car while riding an e-scooter in Delaware County. The plan will ban riders under 16, set a maximum speed of 20 mph, and require helmets for some riders—measures aimed at creating clear statewide safety guidelines.  FOX43
  • The School District of Lancaster faces financial challenges from the ongoing state budget impasse and is opening a $35 million credit line to keep schools running through the rest of the year. The district, which relies on $155 million in state funds, will cut non-essential services and may borrow more money after January—if no budget agreement is reached soon.  WGAL
  • Lancaster city officials are asking property owners to provide a healthy evergreen (at least 30 feet tall and full on all sides) to serve as the Christmas tree in Penn Square. The selected tree will be cut and moved to the square in late November for the tree-lighting ceremony on November 28 and later turned into mulch for city parks.  FOX43
