- ➤ The Ashville Road covered bridge in Little Britain Twp.—a historic span over the Octoraro Creek—is set to close for six weeks starting Monday, Oct. 20 to allow permanent repairs after being hit by a vehicle in March, and drivers in Lancaster and Chester counties will use a designated detour. - ➤ A local Sheetz is asking customers to use cashless payment options or round up their purchases due to a penny shortage as the U.S. Mint will soon stop producing pennies because it costs more than their value — a store sign in south-central Pennsylvania explains that shoppers can also exchange spare pennies for a self-serve drink. - ➤ Millersville University students led by Professor Timothy Trussell have been excavating the remains of the 18th-century Gailbraith Ordinary near Marietta — they uncovered thousands of artifacts including oyster shells that suggest the tavern once imported seafood. The field school will let visitors view the site on Oct 15 and Oct 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. FOX43
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ UGI announced it will replace natural gas mains in Lancaster starting Oct. 13 until the end of October; drivers will face road closures, detours, parking restrictions, and some natural gas service interruptions. Work occurs weekdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.—affecting streets such as South Lime and Seymour—while temporary restoration follows the repairs. PennLive
- ➤ Portions of Route 30 and Route 222 are shut down in Lancaster County and detours will be in place all weekend—drivers may be directed through Lancaster or along Route 272/Oregon Pike as police ask for patience at the busy interchange. WGAL
