Good morning, Lancaster. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 18th of November.

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Cope Company Salt, the largest salt distributor in Lancaster County for over 50 years, stored about 600 tons of salt and delivered 20 semi-trucks a week to clear roads and sidewalks for schools and nursing homes before winter storms hit. The company sourced salt from around the world including the Dead Sea—ensuring safe travel across Lancaster and nearby areas.  WGAL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study shows turkey prices have jumped 75 percent since last October and a typical 15-pound bird will cost around $31 by Thanksgiving — a 25 percent rise from last year. Bird flu has forced farmers to remove many turkeys, with over 18.9 million lost nationwide since early 2022 — a loss that may tighten supplies for local shoppers.  Daily Voice
  • Gas stations switched to winter-blend gas before the cold set in as the fuel mix has more butane and additives to help cars start easily and prevent fuel line freezing. This blend is usually a bit cheaper than summer gas and is used from September to November.  WGAL
  • Keegan Urey began farming right out of high school and sometimes takes his daughters Ella and Emmy on barge trips that ferry empty trucks of Rexroth Farms to Hill and Shelley islands on the Susquehanna River for grain pickups. Robert Huntsberger, 73, has driven the barge for 20 years — he added 20 extra feet and new durable pontoons — and overcame past mishaps to keep the harvest moving.  WGAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The FOX43 Weather Impact Team said Lancaster is forecast to see 12–18 inches of snow this winter due to a weak La Niña and negative QBO that bring colder air and shifting storm tracks. A fast start in December—with a likely white Christmas—will give way to a brief thaw in January and stronger snow chances in late February to early March, suggesting a slightly milder season than last winter.  FOX43

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Lawmakers studied small modular reactors to meet Pennsylvania's growing energy needs at a hearing on Monday, hearing experts explain that SMRs use less land and can power homes and data centers. They will debate House Bill 2017 today to address safety, workforce training, and attract new industries + boost economic development in the state.  FOX43

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. John Goldman of UPMC told WGAL News 8 that everyone should get their flu and COVID shots—especially those over 65 or with health issues—and wash hands to help fight germs this cold and flu season. He urged people who feel very sick to call their doctor early rather than going straight to an emergency room.  WGAL
