Good morning, Lancaster. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 21st of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lancaster is preparing for Extra Give—the region's largest day of online giving—as a downtown light show today previews the lights for the event starting at midnight. Over 450 organizations and 40,000 donors have raised nearly $110 million for local causes since the event began in 2012.  WGAL
  • Lancaster City chose the 25-foot Norway spruce from the Goodman family as its Christmas tree for Penn Square. The tree, planted 30 years ago by Brett Goodman's daughter, was cut down today with help from PPL — the mayor will light it on Nov. 28.  WGAL
  • Tenfold’s temporary shelter will open on Dec. 1 on Duke Street to offer a renovated space and day center services from Anchor Lancaster for local homeless residents. The winter shelter operates from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. daily until March 1—volunteers are still needed to support the effort.  WGAL
  • Lancaster EMS works with the Lancaster County Food Hub to bring food and supplies to homebound patients—15 to 20 staff deliver packages with food, meats, and toiletries multiple times each week. The program started in 2016 and now helps over 1,000 patients each month.  WGAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lancaster school district will receive an extra $4.9 million from a new state budget that lifts total funding to about $85 million — up 5% from last year. Superintendent Keith Miles said 70% of the funding goes to staff payroll while the rest will support programs such as facility upkeep and social-emotional learning, with the first funds expected next week.  Local 21 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • WGAL Meteorologist Ryan Argenti debunked four winter weather myths by explaining that heat escapes evenly from all exposed skin, snow can fall below freezing when there is enough moisture, and blizzards are defined by strong winds and low visibility rather than snowfall totals. He also clarified that alcohol does not warm the core but only gives a warm feeling — providing clear guidance for winter weather understanding.  WGAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Borough manager Karen Gerhart said that Ephrata National Bank withdrew its demolition application for the Wenger Feed Mill—she said a new application will be on the zoning board agenda next month.  WGAL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Jeffrey Newswanger, the Urgent Care medical director at WellSpan, warned Lancaster residents to be cautious in icy weather to help prevent falls and frostbite. He recommended dressing in layers and taking care when hanging Christmas lights—residents should seek care if they cannot bear weight on an injured limb.  WGAL
